The Carters at Christmas

This photograph of President Jimmy Carter, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and their daughter Amy posing in front of the Blue Room Christmas tree was taken by Karl Schumacher in December 1977. The decorations that year celebrated a classic American Christmas and featured handmade craft ornaments. Mrs. Carter, a mental health reform activist, invited an organization for handicapped Americans to create the more than 2,000 ornaments that eventually adorned the tree. The volunteers used local materials, such as pine cones from Colorado and nut pods from Hawaii, to make the ornaments.
